1st visit to Puri to Bhubhaneshwar (65kms)—called as “Jewel of eastern india”
Bhubhaneshwar capital of Odissa and called as Temple city because it houses thousands of temples around the city.Among these temples the largest temple is Lingaraj Temple ,the abode of Lord siva. The tower is about 180ft (55m) tall. The temple architecture represents the Kalinga Architecture.
Kalinga Desam:
The Emperor Ashoka, no introduction needed for anyone about him ,from our child hood days we use to study about Ashoka.I still remember some lines of his life read in history classes “ The Great Ashoka had planted trees on both sides of roads so...on.. …………… this was the reading pack of the history class about Ashoka in our classrooms .
Ancient capital of Kalinga empire is Bhubhaneshwar, it has a history that dates back to over 2,200 years and was witness to the great battle fought at Dhauli between the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka and the small kingdom of Kalinga in 3rd century B.C.The blood shed and massive destruction of the war changed the heart of Ashoka, who went on to embrace the compassionate teachings of Lord Buddha….
Our 1st visit to Lingaraj Temple!!!!! Worth visiting
Lingaraj Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to
Harihara, a form of Shiva and Vishnu. Lingaraj temple is located at Bindusagar Lake.
The temple represents the quintessence of the Kalinga Architecture and
culminating the medieval stages of the architectural tradition at Bhubaneswar.
The temple is believed to be built by the kings from the Somavamsi Keshari Kings with later additions from the Ganga rulers Anantavarman Chodaganga. Each increasing in the height to its
predecessor. The temple complex has 50 other shrines and is enclosed by a large
compound wall. The temple is protected by high solid red sand stone . Our guide gave us 30 minutes to have darshan and come back to
bus, he also cautioned us about the pandas. because the pandas at the main gate would be back of visitors and ask us for donations or they say us as they take us to sanctum if we pay them,it is a difficult task to get rid of them unless we are arrogant towards them. Always carry minimum cash u required in purse to avoid fleecing by them in the name of god….
We are not allowed to take cameras
and phones inside temple, so please drop your belongings at the temple counter.
But for photography lovers there is one viewing platform located western side,
outside the temple complex. You can have long shots but the carvings cannot be
captured even by zoomed lens in morning because the sun from east opposite side
mar the quality of pictures. Evening is the best time for Photography.Temple has Simhadwara main entrance on east side from where usually all devotees enter into temple.
Usually Kalinga Architecture style of construction built in a way ,temple divides into 4 chambers ,1st bhoga mandapa,2nd nata mandira (dancing hall),3rd assembly hall,4th sanctum sanctorum(sacred duel) and it has vimana (spire). This is another heritage and famous temple consisting 150 other shirnes in the inner temple complex.
After blissful darshan we came out of the temple.
Quick Info:
- Non Hindus are not allowed into sanctum but can view the temple complex. As hearsay even Indira Gandhi former PM was also not allowed to enter the sanctum as she married to non Hindu.
- Temple timings: 5 am - 8pm
- Photography :Not allowed
- Entry :No fee
- Be Cautious ---This is the place where usually people will be cheated in the name of god none other than by pujaris (localy called as pandas)These pandas are very notorious and find every where in the temple so be cautious in dealing them. They force us to pay huge amt in order to get the blessings of the god and were kept asking donations in the name of god.

2nd
visit Mukteshwar Temple,Kedar Gowri & Siddeshwar Temples!!!!
Three places in the list of site seeing are covered at one place in hurry, too good organization by tourism !!!hahaha!! Well while traveling in Bhubaneswar city our guide showed us Assembly hall, High Court and other Government buildings which were very neatly maintained as were the roads , hope same way maintained in our states tooo !!! we reached to Mukteshwar Temple, again same Kalinga architecture & it is under ASI (Archaeological Survey of India)and the temple is neatly maintained in the middle of the garden, which is close to Parashurameshwar temple and built earlier to the Brahmeswara Temple (we have not seen this as it was not in our list of site seeing by travels).
This temple is dated back to 10th century, temple looks very elegant in iconography. This architecture is one of the basic reasons why Mukteshvara Temple is also known as the "Gem of Odisha architecture". The temple has a porch, called torana, which acts as the gateway to the octagonal compound and a rare master piece which are usually seen in Jain & Buddhist architectures,. The arched gateway has thick pillars that have strings of beads and other ornaments carved on statues of smiling women in languorous repose.we see women, peacocks etc sculptures carved on gateway and temple surroundings.
Another temple lies here is Siddeshwar temple, lies in this temple complex ,here the ganesh idol in standing posture in eastern side of base of spire is the highlight. Here the spire is unfinished with less carvings on walls.
Quick Info:
- Temple timings: 9 am -6pm
- Photography : allowed (no fee)
- Entry :No fee

Kedar
Gowri temple
This Kedar Gowri temple is one of the eight Astasambhu Temples,
situated next to Mukteswar Temple, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Here we have this temple in same compound. ,We should walk half km inside to find this dated back temple.Lord Shiva, locally
referred as ‘Kedareshwar’ is the presiding deity of this temple.
During Shital Sasti Lord Lingaraj takes his marriage pocesion from Lingaraj Mandir to
Kedar gowri and there he gets married to Devi Parvathi.
Brief history of temple narrates us here Devi Gouri
is known as the Pithadevi of Ekamrakshetra. when Siva was in Kasi ,he asked Narada to search for another
as this place in future will be crowded,Narada took siva to swarnakuta hill in
the dense forest of Ekamrakanan, siva liked it and resided here, after much
insistence from parvathi he brought her here.
